Itching for some R and R, but don’t have the vacation time or money for an exotic cruise? Take a 215-mile ride to the charming city of Glenwood, the home of the world’s largest outdoor mineral hot springs pool.

Sure, there’s no ocean view and you won’t feel the sand beneath your toes, but the mountainous backdrop is just as aesthetically pleasing.

The large pool stretches 400 feet, so if you were running the length of a football field, you’d need to keep swimming. For those who prefer soaking up the heat in an oversized hot-tub, the therapy pool is heated to a steamy 105 degrees. Though June through August is the peak season, the heated pools are open year-round. So in the winter, after a long day of skiing, visitors can relax their muscles in the pools as snowflakes fall around them.

As long as I can remember, weekend trips filled with the sulfur smell of the Hot Springs have been a part of my summers. I remember standing in line time and time again for the water slide and getting a fruit bar at the snack shop mid-afternoon. But the tradition started way before me.

My father, a Colorado native, smiles every time he thinks about his parents loading the car up for a Glenwood getaway. He’s the type who needs a minute to minute itinerary, jamming as many activities into the trip as the clothing I stuff into my suitcase. But for some reason, Glenwood puts him at ease. There’s something about the environment that forces people to leave work and stress behind them.

The pool is not the city’s only claim to fame. Doc Holliday’s grave is just a short hike away. According to www.glenwoodguide.com, John Henry Holliday, who suffered from tuberculosis, traveled to Glenwood hoping the therapeutic waters would help his health.

But in 1887, while staying at the Hotel Glenwood, he passed away. His tombstone has become a landmark of the old west.

For the outdoorsy, Glenwood offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and white water rafting along the Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers. Glenwood may not be as ritzy as Vail or Aspen, but its natural beauty sparkles in its own light.

For me, one of the biggest draws is the variety of quaint restaurants and shops. For being a mountain town, Glenwood has everything from sushi to hamburgers.

While I love traveling to new exotic places, I hope I will never overlook the hidden gems like Glenwood that are tucked within our own Rocky Mountains.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
