Zidane banned for three matches |

ZURICH, Switzerland — In World Cup play, one head butt nets a three-game suspension.
FIFA gave former French star captain Zinedine Zidane the punishment today for head-butting Italy defender Marco Materazzi during the World Cup final. Materazzi was suspended for two matches.
Fines were issued as well. Zidane will have to pay $6,000 and Materazzi $4,000.
Zidane retired on July 9, so he has agreed instead to three days of community service with children as part of FIFA’s humanitarian projects.
HE SAID, HE SAID
Zidane has said he attacked Materazzi because the Italian player insulted his mother and sister. Materazzi denies insulting Zidane’s mother.
“Both players stressed that Materazzi’s comments had been defamatory but not of a racist nature,” FIFA said in a statement.
APOLOGY
Both players apologized to FIFA for: “their inappropriate behavior and expressed their regret at the incident.”
FIFA president Sepp Blatter has suggested Zidane, widely considered one of the greatest players of his generation, could be stripped of his Golden Ball award as the World Cup’s best player. | Only registered users can write comments.

I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk.
