On streets where graffiti and hip hop is an artform, another subculture has been untied. Though born on the East Coast in the 1970s and early ’80s, sneaker culture still exists in boxes and closets around the world.
Known as sneakerheads, these shoe enthusiasts collect rare or vintage kicks, sometimes spending thousands of dollars on a single pair.
Adam McCombie, 23, of Denver said he has about 50 or 60 pairs.
“I’ve always been into shoes, even from a young age,” he said. “Once I had my own money, I started buying whatever I could.”
McCombie works at Niketown, in Denver and said in the last year or so, he has seen more people come in looking for a specific exclusive pair, for the purpose of showing it off instead of just having something to wear for the next six months. “It’s about having something that no one else has,” he said.
Last week when the new Jordan 4 was released, a line of die-hard sneakerheads formed outside Niketown. To them, shoes are more than just the last article of clothing you put on in the morning. Sneakers are a form of expression, a piece of art. Some sneakerheads will even buy, sell and trade shoes on the Internet.
Though the hobby will probably never be as big in Colorado as it is in New York or San Francisco, McCombie said it is growing. Small shoe boutiques, like Unsoled in Fort Collins, feed the sneaker culture and give sneakerheads a place to go.
“I think everything in Denver and Colorado seems to move a little slower than the coasts or bigger metro cities, but it’s definitely catching on here,” he said. “Denver is just now catching on to the limited sneaker thing.”

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
