Jake, Tell me a Joke

Jake Sharon, 28, of Denver is in the funny business. He describes himself as silly, goofy and spastic — an all-around geek.

“I’ve always been a bit of a geek,” Sharon said. “I used to wear glasses and I’m into video games.”

Like many other comedians, Sharon was a class clown in elementary and high school, but he never thought of pursuing his silliness seriously. Now he has shows all over the state, with a few gigs scattered around the country.

After graduating from Loveland High School in 1996, he earned a degree in broadcasting and English from Hastings College in Nebraska.

He found the broadcasting industry too controlling for him. He worked for a production company for a while before taking the plunge into comedy.

“With standup, I can say whatever I want on stage, but I do pay the consequences sometimes,” Sharon said.

His first open-mike gig was at a bar called Chaps in Cherry Creek, no longer in existence.

“The waitresses walk around in chaps with their butts hanging out,” he said. “A guy told me to get up on stage. I did and it was so horrible, but the chaps were good.”
He didn’t have anything prepared, so he quickly jotted some stuff on a napkin.

Although he wasn’t as well received as he hoped, he didn’t give up. He had enough sense to know all comedians have bad days.

“It can be really hard, especially if you have had a lot of bad shows in a row,” Sharon said. “It messes with your head, but you have to remind yourself why you got into it in the first place — to have fun and screw around. Even famous people still have nights where they get out there and eat it. You just move on.”

Sharon does shows at ComedyWorks and around Colorado. He’s done standup professionally for the last three years. He was also selected along with two others in Colorado to participate in the Boston Comedy Festival in September.

His shows are usually comprised of his own life stories from college jobs to his troubles with the ladies, with a few poop jokes mixed in.

ELIMIJAKE
Jake Sharon made his first television debut on Elimidate a while back. He’s still a little sad he didn’t get picked, he said. One thing he learned was how scripted the show was.

“The show was really heavy-handed,” he said. “The whole time we were sitting around, producers were whispering things in our ears and holding up signs telling us what to say or do.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
