Rugged man shoes are stepping into northern Colorado, kicking regular sandals and flip flops out of the way. In a state where the great outdoors influences everything, why shouldn’t it have a say in footwear? Companies like Keen, Teva and Merrell are designing shoes that are open for better air circulation during the hotter months, but that are also covered at the toes for protection. The practical footwear is marketed toward people with active lifestyles, who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, rafting, running, fishing and swimming. Todd Jordan, manager of Overland Trading Co. in the Foothills Mall in Fort Collins said these type of shoes have been selling really well. “It’s hard to find something for the outdoors that protects your toes,” he said. Overland Trading Co. carries several brands and styles in both men’s and women’s sizes. On average, prices range from $85 to $115, Jordan said. Keen, the company leading the trend was founded in 2003. The idea came from Martin Keen, a world-class sailor, who wanted to create waterproof footwear for adventurers. The thick black rubber sole comes up over the toes in the front of the shoe. Herold Klein, manager of Trade Home in the Foothills Mall said his store used to carry Keen shoes until the company pulled them from the store. “Keen dictates which stores can have them,” he said. “It doesn’t do the consumer any good if only certain stores can carry them.” Trade Home does still carry some similar brands. “More ventilated shoes are becoming more and more popular,” Klien said. |
